Welcome to College Writing 301!

Hi, my name is Richard Carrigan, and I’m going to be your teacher for this course. We are going to begin by looking carefully at some of the causes and effects of poverty. I know, poverty is a huge question, and at times, difficult to understand, but I think in this class, at least we can begin to understand some of the issues involved.

Then after we take a look at poverty in the fist unit, we are going to talk about the essay, and how you can effectively express your ideas and opinions academically.

Then you will have an opportunity to write a five-paragraph essay on the effects or the causes of poverty.

The Lessons

As you study, you will watch video presentations, read passages, and take quizzes.

You will need to pass each quiz with a 70% to move to the next lesson. If your grade is below 70%, you will be able to study and take the quiz again.

Around week two, you will begin working on your final essay. After you revise it, I will give you a score and some pointers on how to improve your writing. I am usually pretty fast, but do give me a few days to get back with you.

Well, I’m looking forward to working with you through this course.

See you in class,

Richard Carrigan
